My contacts say that only 2 were left on furlough; one went to AirTran, and the other failed to requalify. Add to that a some retirements and a couple that went to the FAA, and they will need a few new people around.
I'd be REALLY surprised if they are....I just spoke to someone in dispatch recently and they said they still had some people on furlough. Not impossible, though; maybe they anticipate more need than just those waiting for recall. I will ask a couple of friends and see what's going on. There is a...
I can relate to the above posts. I had a great situation for almost 18 years, dispatching at a small regional, wholly-owned by a major, where I had a super boss, unlimited travel benefits, an adequate salary for the area, and my wife was happy being close to her family, especially after the kids...
I've heard mixed reviews on the transition to rail; some like it, some don't. I recently interviewed with Norfolk Southern on the recommendation of a couple of former pilots I used to work with who are both there now (one is management, the other is a dispatcher). I didn't get the position this...
I can't claim to have done an extensive, nation-wide search of all EMS operations, but I've tried a few over the past couple of years. I even got my EMT certification in hopes that it would make me more marketable, and I also thought the 2006 NTSB recommendation that they staff communications...
Totally agree, with only one comment....most regionals expect all of the above, but want you to do it for $15/hr. No wonder the profession is becoming a place for the young/single/no kids/no mortgage crowd.
I interviewed there in early '08. Back then, I'd heard they were taking people from the ramp and paying to put them through dispatch school, then hoping they had what it took to handle the job. I went in there with nearly 20 years'
experience at another regional, as well as personal...
What usually happens with multiple diverts is that our mainline company, as well as more than one of our contract carriers, will all use our station as an alternate because we are geographically convenient to a couple of big hub cities. When things hit the fan, the diversion decisions are...
Diversions?
Does this apply to diversions as well? I've spent over 20 years on the Dispatch/Ramp/Ops side of the equation, and I'd like the bureaucrats to explain to me how we handle 7 diversions within 30 minutes' time (easily dropping SEVERAL HUNDRED unexpected "guests" in our laps, when PHL...
I heard that from several JetBlue pilot friends at Oshkosh, and they seemed to believe it was definitely going to happen. No one had a specific timetable, although the general impression was that it would probably happen in 2010. That's all the info I've got.
I stand corrected. The numbers I qouted were told to me recently, but since I now live on the fringes instead of in the center of things, I didn't ask for any other info. Thanks.
Allegheny/Piedmont
Allegheny was merged into Piedmont back in '05. Since then the combined fleet of about 110 Dash 8 100/200/300s was been reduced to about 45 Dash 100s & 300s (all of the 200s are gone). The current plan is to further reduce the fleet by 11 a/c by the end of '09. Hard to say...
phr8dawg....
I hear you. I learned to fly in the mid '70s at a flying club that was pretty much just like you described....lots of shirttails hanging all around the room, all of the old low-tech learning devices (I remember when we got our first desktop flight simulator...the ATC 510, I think...
FYI....the original post is not not mine. I simply found it and decided to post it without comment. I'm not old enough to have been there, and my flying is purely for fun; even my airline dispatch days may be over the way it looks. But I thought I'd put it out there just for fun....I'm sure...
In the Age of the 707....
Those were the good ole days. Pilots back then were men that
didn't want to be women or girly men. Pilots all knew who
Jimmy Doolittle was. Pilots drank coffee, whiskey, smoked
cigars and didn't wear digital watches.
They carried their own suitcases and brain bags...
Dispatch pay
A friend who has been at United for about 15 years used to make 6 figures, and can still do it if he works at it. I know dispatchers at other mainline carriers used to be able to make that if they worked overtime. However, I think that, long term, that may be going the same way as...

Why is Continental looking for 4 dispatchers?
According to a friend of mine who is a CAL dispatcher, several dispatchers quit to follow the $$$$ to the oil companies (non-aviation jobs). They have been working short for a while, but apparently they've decided to fill the positions.
I would...
NSW, your points are well taken, as well as accurate.
I've never deluded myself to believe that we dispatchers were saving the world or anything. In fact, I recently worked a part-time job with a hospital comm center, where we dispatched two EMS helicopters and several ambulance units, and I...
