By now many of you have landed on 10/28 in ATL. Just like the ALPA memo and the I am sure the many company memos around the airline industry, they don't want you to taxi off onto highway 285. Just what 285 needs, more traffic problems.

When I have landed on this runway I would have to agree, in some conditions this would be easy to do.

I really have to wonder who approved the markings and making of this structure? The FAA obviously approved the runway. The airport obviously approved the runway.

Where was the professional pilot in this approval process who would of picked up on this upon their first landing?

This really makes me wonder who is running the FAA. I would think they would of had this area marked differently after the first test run. I guess they need to see how many pilots accidentally taxi onto 285 to get to ramp 3.

Come on this is not rocket science. And how much went into this project?

:rolleyes:Don't worry, when someone "Unfortunately" taxis onto 285, it will be PILOT ERROR! Forget the fact that the FAA and Airport Planning totally DROPPED the ball on this one! Be Safe EVERYONE!!!!

It will be soon called ATL's Green monster. They will begin to paint the whole area of the Bridge Green.

I like it...its convenient for me on that last leg home. Take runway 10 to I285 to the Clark Howell exit. Saves a ton of time getting to the car. :)

Exactly,. Do you not look ahead where you're going?

Also, the two taxiways going out there, isn't it common sense to take the one to your right coming and going? (tower hasnt advised, they just say taxi and hold short of 27L) I have seen two planes come head to head this past weekend alone. (i wont mention who it was,.......... Delta!!!)

Ok, I haven't been to ATL in over a year. Are you telling me you can taxi an A/C out onto a highway?

You can taxi a 737 into a Conoco station if you're looking for full service pumps.

The main problem I have witht the design of the new airport area is the double letter taxiway names. That can make for some very confusing clearances. For example: Is "taxi romeo-charlie sierra whiskey to 27"
a. R to C to S to W to 27, or
b. RC to S to W to 27, or
c. some other combination

It can be very confusing, particularly if you are unfamiliar with the airport. IAH is the worst when it comes to this.

10/28 crosses over I285. The bridge has yellow lines on it which can give the impression of a high speed exit.

From what I've heard they don't even ask ATC'ers before they make changes to the NAS.

So start filling out NASA or ASRS forms about this. If enough show up maybe a change will be made.

That's actually a good idea. If everyone who lands on 10 takes about 5 minutes to write up a NASA form maybe they will change the markings. What I'l like to see it marked with is yellow and black checkerboard over the entire overpass, at least that part which isn't taxiway or runway. Then it would be obvious.

Yea, those city streets have a lot less traffic on them.

Why not paint it Red and White checkerboard? Would'nt it stand out a lot more? Michael, I agree with you, they are not going to be able to have the 2.5mile spacing for aircraft landing on this runway. Especially if the visibility sucks, I will be taxing to the END!!!

Yeah, red and white would work too, but I think they are used mainly for vehicle traffic. May be wrong there, but that's the impression I was under.

LOL, that was a Chevron station (if you are talking about BUR) And take a look at the gas prices back then.

Anyways, I am a little dense. I still don't get it. I suppose I need a picture drawn for me.

They painted yellow chevrons on the overpass part that is not part of the runway. The overpass crosses the runway at about a 45 degree angle, just about the same as a high speed exit, angled the same way that a left turnoff would be for landing on 10. One of the yellow lines intersects the side of the runway just past the first high speed. What people are saying is that in low vis it would be very easy to mistake that yellow line for a high speed exit. The problem is compounded by the fact that the entire surface is the same base color.

The City will begin repainting the shoulders of the runway and taxiway next week. It will now be a black shoulder with yellow chevrons. The rest of the off-limits paved area will be painted green (kind of like at ORD near the bridges).

"...exit at the second highspeed, ground point - ouch, that will NOT buff right out"

And I can see a couple of our tower guys saying exactly that...:)

Is that what you think should happen or did you hear / read that somewhere?

Anyone have a picture??? I haven't been to ATL in a while.

We received a picture of it in the last jepps update, "courtesy of delta airlines"
I think the checkers board yellow/black idea is good, or a magenta/cyan one will do it too especially for the crj drivers who are used to those canadian colors...;)

yea it was a bad design but its not that difficult to figure out. They will change it soon enough.

No one said it was difficult to figure out. People were merely saying that in low vis situations it would be much more likely that a mistake would be made. Maybe you don't ever make mistakes.

Add in a duty day of about 15 hours, wx delays, last minute runway change, etc. and it is your first time in here.....Of course it would be 'pilot error'.

you guys are such pus?>es. get over it. how many times in a low vis landing are you going to exit the runway without lead off lights??? the chevrons look nothing like taxiway centerlines. atlanta needed a new runway, they got it. what should they have done, closed down 285 for good. its because of all of the deltoids complaing, they are now going to paint it green, just for you. happy???
