I want to buy an older laptop older 486 or Pentium would be fine. Needs to have at least a CD drive, floppy drive, and a serial port.

How much are you looking to spend? I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 in excellent condition that I am thinking of upgrading from... I'd be willing to part with it for a reasonable price:
Pentium III, 700 Mhz
512 Mb ram
20GB Hard drive
56k Modem
Network
WiFi (802.11g/b)
Dual batteries
Floppy drive
DVD-Rom drive
SXGA+ display (1400x1050)

What are you looking for? Something to keep the papers from blowing off your desk? Or something to keep that pesky office door from creeping shut???

I need something to run the software I use to program the fuel and ignition maps in my car.

It is an old DOS software and the EMS communicates via serial cable....

how about a typewriter and a 13" TV from KMART, you can return the TV when you're done with it!

I have a really nice Compaq 1600 Presario. It has a 100Mhz Celeron processor. Large 14.1 inch screen. 6x DVD/CD drive. It runs on Windows 98.

sounds like you need to run it through windows but in compatibility mode for windows 95.

right click the icon for the program, properties, compatibility...select the OS mode, select the mremory allocations (max on all should do it)

i was able to get an old 1985 DOS game to run in XP that way. still runs at fast clocks but the thing loads up and it works. if not, good luck finding an old laptop.....dosent teh map company have any updated software that will work with their older products?
