If you work for Alaska be VERY afraid. If you merge with usair your unit costs will double and they'll end up telling you they need to focus on the lucrative BUF-PHL type runs "because that's where the money is" and they'll shut down SEA and all your west coast routes (the "money losing" anchor) and furlough you out of seniority and then tell you how they saved you. Study the history of the PSA, Piedmont, and America West mergers. Delta knew; learn what they did to kill their little near-merger. Get ready to burn the house down if that's what it takes to prevent it.

usair = death

This Post is not an exaggeration. It is from someone who knows firsthand the history of USAir's "modus operandi",having spent time flying for both the east and west operation. Listen to what this man says. He speaks the truth.

If one was impressed with the Yields from BUF to PHL, then one would be ecstatic over the price of sending 6 Cat diesel motors from Long Beach to King Salmon Alaska.

Alaska Airlines knows how to charge for their services. It's not a charity. The fishing fleet is keenly aware of this as well. There will be no Mergers with Alaska. Too complicated.

Agreed. Alaska has a very unique niche in this industry. I think it would be impossible to ingrain their culture and way of doing business into another company in a merger. It would be a disaster for everyone. The guy who wrote this article is a moron.

Mergers are about the money. Not one of these guys cares about the "culture" or way of doing business, other than to give it lip service to keep the people pulling on the oars. If they can skim some of the money off the top during the transaction, all the better for them. "Them" of course it the upper management, lawyers and banks/hedge funds.

Don't those Alaska boys agree to anything?......for instance: when they agreed to be arbitrated a big pay cut.

A good family friend is a senior VP at Alaska Air and he said that the US air merger rumor is false. In regards to mergers he said you could never say never but that they were not looking for it at this time. He said they have a different operation than most and it would not blend well with another. They feel their stand alone plan it what is best for the airline. I asked about SWA and he concurred that the fleets would match up but again that they do business differently and the match up was only in the fleets.

SWA+Alaska would be one way the pilots at Alaska could get a pay raise.

What does your VP family friend say about us pilots reaching a deal soon? Feel free to PM me!

I did not ask him about when you will reach a deal. I did ask him what he thought about pay raises and his answer was typical of management.

Most people at our airline don’t have a clue. SWA wants nothing to do with us… There will be no pay raise. I bet we will be in Chapter 11 by early spring and our precious A plan will be gone! Were climbing out of a train wreck here and everyone is so delusional from the impact they are stumbling around the carnage looking for money that hasn’t been here since the 1970’s.

Uh, 2nd best fuel hedge, 2nd least likely to be in chap 11 according to WSJ, over 1 billion in the bank, monopolys on many routes.

I'll take your bet Mr. Dumass.

GB,

You're assuming that Bill and gang WANT to stay out of BK this time around. I think they regret staying out of it last time. Staying out of the post-9/11 BKs forced them to actually manage the airline. It has been hard work. They've taken a lot of crap.

Even with the pluses you mention, they could easily run this thing into bankruptcy in six months if they decided that was a way to get their coveted CASMs down. (You know -- 2010 plan and all.) They could use BK to get costs that would make the Kasherstration look like a good deal.

Plus then they'd have a way to easily get their pound of flesh from all us greedy, self-serving, over-fed Horizon pilots.

I wouldn't put anything past Bill Ayer. He has no integrity. Despite all his past protestations, I think he'd consider a sham bankruptcy. He and the Board will get paid either way.
