Garmin. . .Mode S transponder/GNS 430. That's a good setup. Keep in mind that the traffic alerting is only available where radar sites are Mode S compliant.

The garmin package is great have it in my plane The portable ones are not much help used them a couple times need something that tells you the direction of traffic. Best bet use flight following if your vfr all the time you can.

I think he may have been referring to a SureCheck or a Monroy type of device. I have just sold my SureCheck VRX so I can upgrade to the new ZaonFlight (.com) XRX. It provides not only the relative altitude and distance of the target but quadrant direction. It's not out until the end of November and it priced pretty steeply at $1795. If you're looking for something more affordable I'd stick with the VRX (list $795).
