I have an ATP with 1900tt with 600 sic multi-turbin from a part 121 op. If I wanted to break into the corporate world down in SoCal/LA area, what’s the best way? Would buying my own type rating help or hurt? If so what should I get? Got furloughed almost two years ago but have stayed current on my own and am looking to retake my vow of poverty and get back into aviation. Also, since I will be turning 39 soon, is my age going to count against me, or will it help (I’ve been to the airlines and don’t really want to go back)?

Connections is the best way. A good company will pay for your type. Go the the operators and make yourself known. Keep in touch with them and if they ask about your airline experience make sure you add that you dont want to go back to the airline. Corp. flight dept get nervious if they are going to spend alot of money on a type for you and you decide to go back to the airline when they call.

You may have to go with a 135 jet charter operator at first to get more flight time to get on with a good corporate flight department.

P.S. No job is perfect but I love my 91 corporate job
GOOD LUCK

Ditto - it's not what you know, but who you know. My company paid $31,000 for my type rating. Asked if I had a problem signing a 2 year contract, I said shoit! I want a 15 year contract.

Also, if a bottomfeeder company knows that you will pay for your own type, it is an indication that you will do anything to get a job which equates to substandard pay and busting regs.

Networking is the best way to get on.

Buy a CE500 type rating. There are so many job opportunites with this a/c. Whatever you do, dont buy your rating if a company wants you to. If they want you to, they dont need an airplane.

With your total time you would be looking at right seat positions so I would spend your time networking and save your money. The type without any time in type is pretty useless.

1900 TT may net you a part 135 PIC in a King Air if you can scrounge some time in type or know somebody. Insurance will pretty much keep you out of the left seat of a Part 91 jet until you get some more TT.

Bottom line, a good company will pay for your type, pass on the other bottom feeders unless you like working for peanuts and being in debt.

Save your money. Don't buy a type. If you're a good person and establish contacts you shouldn't have a problem. Just keep hangin in there.

don't pay for sh**. if these companies can afford an airplane they can afford to get you qualified. besides people that work for free or pay their own way f**k up the industry for people with self respect. if you go through the work to get you license then you need to respect yourself and let someone pay you what your worth. i don't think doctors have to pay hospitals to do their residency. if they did then you would never get good service. you get what you pay for and these corporations need to open the check book and take care of their dedicated employees

don't mind what i said i was only picking on mxflyer. he knows who i am. good luck with job opportunities and do whatever you think is best for your career
