During my brief stint with Eagle I overnighted in SXM once and thought it was a really cool island....

We're thinking about heading down there next month. Anyone stayed at the Maho beach resort or other local hotels? Dutch vs. French side? Anyone been there recently have any suggestions for things to do, etc. I know about the Sunset beach bar...I may even get the wife to drink for free. What else?

If anyone knows of any rentals, that could be an option too.

Thanks.

Just went there about a month ago. Stayed at Marys Boon Beach Plantation (google it). Rooms were nice and they were cheap, which surprised me. They'll give you a 10% airline employee discount too! There is no transportation provided by the hotel, but it was by far one of the best beaches on the island and a 20 minute walk to Maho beach to watch the planes. They are on the departure end of the runway, opposite Maho and have an observation deck to watch those big guys take off. Maho Beach Resort was nice, we used their facilities but didnt stay there. Maho itself is small but some things to do i.e. shops, casinos, restaurants etc. If you do stay at Marys boon there is no transportation provided by the hotel. Which brings me to my next point, rent a car. When you get to the airport you will be attacked by car rental guys, so flash your airline employee badge and get the best rate you can with that. I got a car from safari car rentals and it was 2 days for around $35 USD. Dutch side is definetly more happening than the french side, but the french side is worth seeing, thats where the car comes in. Drove around the entire island in about 4 to 5 hours with a stop in phillipsburg and about 8 different beaches. Also drove to paradise peak which is the highest point on the island, and is a nice interesting drive to the top, basically up a two track. PM Me if you have any other questions.
