It mainly depends on the airline. Some have you flying on reserve for as much as a year. Others have no reserve at all, like tprop operators. Usually it's 3-4 day schedules out of 20 or more work days where you are waiting for a call, usually 12 hours per day. It's not all that bad if you live near your base, a lot of people just chill in the crashpad and play video games and may never get a call for days.
Scheduling will call you at 5 am and leave a message saying its a courtesy call for a trip latter that morning (hoping you'll pick up the phone so they can assign a duty-in earlier than the start of your reserve period (+ 2hrs).
