reserve question

It mainly depends on the airline. Some have you flying on reserve for as much as a year. Others have no reserve at all, like tprop operators. Usually it's 3-4 day schedules out of 20 or more work days where you are waiting for a call, usually 12 hours per day. It's not all that bad if you live near your base, a lot of people just chill in the crashpad and play video games and may never get a call for days.

and then there's ASA. Current reserve time is about a year. Since January, there is no such thing as "playing video games and never getting called". Currently they're assigning 2, 3, and 4-day trips and extending them to 5 and 6-days.

You can't make solid plans b/c they'll change your off days for a single round trip.

Scheduling will call you at 5 am and leave a message saying its a courtesy call for a trip latter that morning (hoping you'll pick up the phone so they can assign a duty-in earlier than the start of your reserve period (+ 2hrs).

Hah hah! Mesa does that one all the time! I think it's an intelligence test or something (HINT: smart people don't answer, smarter people don't have voicemail).

Get on THAT crew scheduling post-it note, and you'll soon learn the meaning of the phrase "No good deed goes unpunished".
 
Can anybody share what your schedule is like while on reserve

Mesa: (generally)

8 days off every 28 days. NO exceptions. Ever. For anyone.

All reserve lines are 12 hr shifts (an R, R1, R2 that start at 6am, noon, or 6pm). 90 minute callout.

You WILL get called out. Even if it's to deahead 1 day, fly 1 leg the next day, and deadhead back the third day. (happens daily)

When you ARE called out, you will always be put back on reserve when you return. Whatever it takes to get 12 hours of you that day, no matter if it's 6 hours, 10 hours, or 30 minutes.

About half the reserve lines are 6 days on/ 2 days off. The other half are constructed for two 3 day off blocks and 1 2 day off.

Unless you're in PHX, you'll be doing a LOT of this: Ready Reserve (sitting at the airport in uniform). Min Ready reserve shift is 8 hours, but 10 hours is standard, and 12 is a possibility.

Reserve runs a year or more for CRJ fo's. And you'll do that same year (or more) all over again when you upgrade in 3, 4, or 5 years.

And always take a 4 day bag with you to the airport . . . your 1 day trip can very easily become a 6 day marathon.
