This questionnaire is to help me answer questions related to the safety of operating Technically Advanced Aircraft over traditional General Aviation aircraft.

Please answer each question by STATING IF YOU STRONGLY DISAGREE, DISAGREE, NEUTRAL, AGREE, AND STRONGLY AGREE.

1. Extensive ground training should be mandatory prior to ever flying a TAA?

2. TAA should be made into a logbook endorsement? (e.g. tail wheel, high performance or high altitude)

3. Pilots who fly both TAA and traditional “steam gauge” aircraft should be required to maintain currency in both separately?

4. The advanced avionics in TAA add to a pilot’s situational awareness?

5. TAA are safer than traditional General Aviation aircraft?

6. Pilots who get their primary training in TAA rely on the flight instruments too much during VFR flight?

7. Pilots who train in TAA are not going to be able to transition to traditional GA aircraft very easily?

8. I fly a TAA I don’t need to do any fuel planning it is right in front of me on my MFD!

9. TAA can be a crutch to a pilot with bad Situational Awareness?

10. TAA is the way all aircraft should be configured. (Moving map GPS, autopilot, FADEC, Etc…

1 TOO vague, required by who? FBO? FAA? Instruction BY A CFI?

My personal experiences with training students on a G1000 cockpit have been very similar. They tend to get distracted by all the cool displays. I've watched as one student got all befuddled and distracted because the TIS was going off, so much to the point the student was literally leaning over, focused on the MFD, never even looking outside for the traffic, or where the plane was going and the plane was rolling into a diving turn at 1500'. I got to the point where I had to turn it off. That's the problem I have with glass cockpits. Very distracting for students. It's like a video game to them. And these are adults, not kids. Otherwise, I love them. While we had a G1000 C172, I tended to be in favor of learning on the regular C172s and upgrade after they get their PPLs.
BTW - I'm not intending to start a debate over this, I just wanted to give you some more detailed feedback for your survey.

item one would be a possible requirement by the FAA or by the FBO you would rent the aircraft from...even insurance carriers.

Nope..not looking for a debate, just CFI and student experiences with TAA. I have very little experience with this type of aircraft and want to know more about the pitfalls, problems, and if the FAA should get involved to regulate TAA training.

Our FBO doesnt let anyone just come in and take up a G1000. We have a formal checkout, like several hours, including ground on it. And, I believe it's an insurance thing for us as well. We don't have G1000 anymore, so it's not an issue. We do offer the G1000 CPC kit as well. Probably not a bad idea.

Want defines a TAA?

What I think really needs to be addressed more is GPS training for the IFR rating. Especially WAAS. Most of the TAA issues you bring up are in relation not to the aircraft but GPS.

1. Extensive ground training should be mandatory prior to ever flying a TAA?
Disagree, It isn't that much different

2. TAA should be made into a logbook endorsement? (e.g. tail wheel, high performance or high altitude)
Disagree
3. Pilots who fly both TAA and traditional “steam gauge” aircraft should be required to maintain currency in both separately?
Strongly Disagree
4. The advanced avionics in TAA add to a pilot’s situational awareness?
Agree, If used properly
5. TAA are safer than traditional General Aviation aircraft?
Neutral
6. Pilots who get their primary training in TAA rely on the flight instruments too much during VFR flight?
Agree, Even as a CFI I tend to let the displays distract me more than I should
7. Pilots who train in TAA are not going to be able to transition to traditional GA aircraft very easily?
Disagree
8. I fly a TAA I don’t need to do any fuel planning it is right in front of me on my MFD!
Strongly Disagree
9. TAA can be a crutch to a pilot with bad Situational Awareness?
Agree
10. TAA is the way all aircraft should be configured. (Moving map GPS, autopilot, FADEC, Etc…
Disagree, It can be handy, but far from necessary

Personally, I don't participate in surveys...they're generally written primarily to support a particular thesis, and no matter how you answer the questions, you seem to be supporting that particular thesis.

I will say, however, that I have flown with quite a few pilots who have no real training in TAA. Some are extremely knowlegeable and competent. Others are stupid and incompetent.

I have also flown with quite a few who have training in TAA aircraft. Some are extremely knowlegeable and competent, and others are stupid and incompetent.

Fly safe!

David
