Pilots union workers picket the union

At first glance, it seems like just another airline labor dustup -- picketers in Fort Worth criticizing the lack of progress in contract talks with their airline organization.

But the protesters who marched Monday morning weren't airline employees, and airline management wasn't the target. This demonstration was conducted by employees of the Allied Pilots Association, and the managers being criticized are union pilots.
The Allied Pilots Staff Employee Association represents 23 employees who work for the pilots union, which is headquartered in Fort Worth near American Airlines offices. Members include paralegals, graphic artists, administrative assistants and other hourly employees.

Spokeswoman Kathy Schroeder, a paralegal, said the union has been working without a contract for nearly 300 days. She says the labor group agreed to concessions in their last contract, which was inked five years ago.

"Right now, what we want is to restore our contract to what it was before concessions," said Kathy Schroeder, a paralegal for the APA and a spokesman for the staff union. "Right now the APA is refusing to restore any of the items we lost."

She said the last contract, signed five years ago, included no raises, although the APA eventually did give pay increases that totaled about 4 percent over the past five years. The contract expired nearly 300 days ago, Schroeder said, but little progress has been made at the negotiating table.

APA spokesman Gregg Overman said he wasn't commenting on the talks or the picketing.
The protesting at the APA offices comes just days after the pilots union marched at airports and the headquarters of American Airlines corporate customers, criticizing airline management. Contract talks between the pilots union and the airline have dragged on for more than 18 months, and have been increasingly bitter.
The APA's tough stance against its own employees is "quite puzzling," Schroeder said. "We're behind them 100 percent in their efforts to get their contract restored, so it's surprising to us that the same people are telling us ours can't be restored."

...how so....educate us o'ALPA H2O carrier....

ALPA shut down all administrative functions when the staffers went on strike. I believe the APA is continuing to operate as usual in spite of the strike. ALPA expedited talks and gave in on a whole host of issues. It was pretty amicable the whole time. The staffers got pay raises and significant other improvements after only a few short days on strike. I was impressed with ALPA's handling of the issue.

....ummm the APA employees aren't actually on strike....The ALPA employees went on strike....This seems like weak evidence of ALPA being superior..which is what the intent was...

The cheerleading section is going to have to do better than this....

Quick, Rez, get your brush, Prater's got some lint on his collar! TC

Hey Rez, in all honestly, Prater is the entire reason you might end up on the street. No picking, or trying to be cruel, just the facts. That idiot or ALPA National in it's entirety sneaking the age 65 into our careers will furlough pilots very soon. That's horrific, I'm all for unions, we desperately need them, but those idiots did more to harm this career than anything I can think of in any union.

can you find a post where I defend Prater?

I simply choose to remain engaged in defending my profession.

I don't reject the US gov't because of W. Should I renounce my US citizenship? Should I be a one issue citizen and reject all things American, US Constitution and Bill of Rights?

How did Prater get elected? Coup? Military force? Or that pesky little thing called democracy? Some one is responsble for placing him in position. Don't worry.... I don't think anyone is blaming you.

Besides, I knew what I was doing...... I'll look in the mirror first...

True. I had to go back and read the article again. I just ass-umed they were striking. My mistake.

So this is where my dues go? To give ALPA staffers pay raises and Significant other improvements? Let me get this straight, ALPA's revenue is the dues that the pilots pay correct? Since 2001 with the massive furloughs and the gutting of contracts that ALPA has allowed to be shoved down our throats, ALPA's revenue must be down as well. So why do we as pilots need to take 30 to 50 percent pay cuts since our employers cannot earn a profit due to their refusal to charge a fare that covers expenses but our union staffers get pay raises and significant other improvements like a 36 hour workweek and fully paid for medical benefits? Oh, and not to mention the money wasted on your fancy DC hotels while the USAPA stays at a normal hotel right where the crews are put up.

Atrocious!! Congratulations USAPA, please return our profession to where it was a mere 15 years ago at the very least. Is that too much to ask?

Business as usual, as long as the senior ALPA officials are living the high life and its minions like me can't rub 2 nickels together. Screw ALPA!

Yeah, that's smart. Screw the staffers who make your union run. I'm sure that will work out well for you.

Who said anything about screwing anyone? Is sharing in the pain their revenue source is experiencing(the pilots) a screwing? Is asking them to put in a 40 hour work week a screwing? Is asking them to pay a portion of their med benefits like I do a screwing? They only work a 4 day work week as well, am I correct? As we pilots have been told, we have to accept the new reality of our industry, but our union staffers are immune from this new reality? I am sure it is not hard to fill ALPA clerical positions. Just like everybody tells us, if we are not satisfied with our jobs then find another right? I mean is that not what our illustrious management teams tell us? While our upper management get millions in bonuses to "retain talent" we pilots are just a dime a dozen, and quite easily replaced, no different than ALPA clerical staff. Look I have no hard feelings for our union staffers but to expect their QOL and wages to increase while ours continually are whittled away, shame on them!

As a matter of fact I bet they are paid more than any of our RJ FO's at any regional in the country. Is that appropriate?
