My grandson, who I have been instructing for the last three years, got his PVT ticket yesterday. I soloed him on his 16th B'day last year at KYIP. Big grin on his face. He will start his senior year of High School with a confidence that comes from achieving a major goal. I taught his dad to fly who, like me, then went into the military to fly and he has gone on to a career in aviation and now to do it for my grandson is a nice family tradition. I pretty well have my grandson talked out of going to college; he is really leaning to go to the trade school.

I know you have strong personal opinions on the value of college. I didn't go to school either and have been very successful in spite of it. If I had to do it all over again though I would have gone to school. While there will always been opportunities to those who work hard and posses a skill, having a degree enhances your resume and I do believe makes you a better person.

My 2 cents on the topic, congratulations to you and your grandson.

College degree!

BRING BACK THE NAVCAD PROGRAM!

TWO YEARS OF COLLEGE (NO DEGREE) NAVY FLIGHT SCHOOL and some fun time on the BOAT!

Former NAVCAD 92'

Congrats on your son YIP! Not bad offspring for a P-3 guy!

Congratulations to your grandson. Not sure I'd have the nerve to ever try to instruct a family member, but if you can do it successfully twice all the more power to you.

kids were easy

But I failed with my wife, we would go out on a lesson, I would say "Lets do S-turns" She would say "I don't like S-Turns, I want to do some more spins" I tried to solo her twice, she got out of the airplane when I did. She could fly very well, but saw no reason to fly alone.

That's a funny story, YIP.

Good luck with the Grandson and your family tradition.

...

That sounds like a ball. Good for you. I signed my Dad off to take his FE written, and he later got his PFE ticket (he is an A&P). I plan on getting him his private as well. I have two sons, and if either of the WANT to learn to fly, I will instruct them. Good way to bond and make sure that they are taught the right way.

Cheers.
