The first flying car was built in 1937.

Then, as now, it was the answer to a question nobody asked. Next up: news story about the car that turns into a boat, the personal jetpack, and the wristwatch telephone.
 
Cheaper to get your helicopter liscence and just park your helicopter in your back yard
 
It'll never go into production. Too many potential problems, and regulations in both aviation and the auto industry that I can't see being satisfied at the same time. Eg; the wings cause a serious blind spot. To be street legal they would have to put truck mirrors to see around the wing. This would cause tremendous drag in flight.
Oh and no bumpers. The forward canard is essentially the bumper and the stableator is essentially the rear bumper......really?!?! Using control surfaces as bumpers?!?!
