Somebody told me once that FedEx circles 1 plane west of the Mississippi and 1 plane east each night during prime time to fill in case an aircraft has a technical. Any truth to this, just one of those kind of interesting things you hear around the hanger but always wonder if it is true or hanger talk

Circle? I don't think so. But we do have "sweep flights" which takeoff little later than everyone else and have very little freight. They are used to drop into any airport where there is excess freight or maintenance problems. Maybe that is what you are thinking about.

Circle??? You mean like ALERT 1? Fedex definitely has the money for it, even at todays fuel prices.

UPS used to do this. They had "sweep" aircraft, usually empty DC-8's that would orbit at strategic areas to recover volume. I think they used to have at least three aircraft airborne. One around the socal, southwest area. One orbiting from RFD to MSP area and one orbiting in the southeast.

Do they call them very very ready reserve? i think they are just some bad a$$ dudes.
