Hey Cod Dude,
I know plenty about officer country, in fact I socialized and particpated in squadron sports, and off-base activities with quite a few officers that I flew with and some that I knew through flying and others purely social. In fact, my old workout partner was an ex-FooDog when I was stationed at NASNI. Great guy, and now a Delta pilot. One of my best freinds to this day.
As for that "Air Farce" comment...Well, my Dad did a few "other" things like fly combat in two wars and was in-country in another flying for a government contractor. A totally ignorant and out of context comment that you and I both know you had no business making. I don't see that as anything other than spitefull and considering he is dead even more antagonistic. I'm sorry that you feel that way about senior officers from a brethern branch of the service, and a **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** fine pilot in his time.
Sadly, I can't even begin to say that I was treated as well in my eight years as a naval officer. It's all perspective
Now that comment seems to be a little more on the whining side than just complaining about schedule, lifestyle...blah, blah, ad naseum. To me it is insulting. Not out of any bitterness. Moreover it is a matter of selflessness to be not only a Naval officer, but to serve one's country. To me thats what's all about. The mission, your crew and your squadron/ship. EVERYTHING else is secondary. This is how I tried my very best to serve, and his comment really struck a chord with me and thats all I can say.
A statement like the one above made in the presence of junior enlisted personnel would be very bad for morale. I was a division CPO and TRAINED JO's! In fact, if I heard any JO's bitching within earshot I'd tell them to take it down the passageway or save for the wardroom.
This attitude that your friend seems to come across that he was like an exception rather than the rule. It's TOUGH for everyone in the military, BUT a leader...A real leader will set the tone for the division in which he is in charge. So, I cannot accept his comment out of hand and not have the hair stand-up on the back of my neck. I'm sure he's a great guy and probably was a hell-raiser on liberty like the rest of them, so I'll leave it at that...
Thanks for the "Pony"
regards,
ex-Navy Rotorhead
