Anyone ever applied to be a DPE? Successful?

Any helpful info on the process or "tips" would be appreciated.

Thanks

do you have connections with your local FSDO? Do you have a track record with them?

do you have connections with your local FSDO? Do you have a track record with them?

I was just down at the FSDO the other day to renew my CFI and this very subject came up in conversation. According to the inspector processing my renewal, the official policy is to apply through the National Examiner Board and take a knowledge test before being placed in a national candidate pool. Individual FSDOs then request a list of qualified candidates from the NEB when the need arises. Candidates are then selected from this list.

The final selection determination is still at the discretion of the FSDO manager, so having that individual as a supporter is still important. But if not on the NEB referral list, it's theoretically impossible to be selected for standardization training and designation. And the manager does have to justify selecting lesser qualified candidates if challenged, so being his buddy is no guarantee...

So if interested, I suggest getting to know your local FSDO manager before jumping through all those hoops! It turns out that getting hired as an inspector is a very similar proposition.

Hope that helps.

charter dog is correct. i have been trying for over a decade, with no luck. Took the dpe written every 2 years to remain in the 'pool"....If your local FSDO does not have a demand, you are out of luck. Good luck

PAIN IN THE ASS.....I just started the process. I have two examiners helping but there's really not a whole lot they can do.

Here's a good article about everything you can expect all along the way. Its long but completely informative. Start studying for the Written test and get that application sent in.

A bunch of DPE's around here will be retiring or dying off here pretty soon....... lol

is there money in this? What about the liability issues?

No liability at all from what I've heard...and YES, lots of easy money.

Around here, unless things have changed recently, DPE's can do two full check-rides a day at $300.00+ each and a couple re-checks at around $150-$200 each. DPE's around here are swamped, completely swamped.
