Was on the crew bus a couple days ago and heard two instructor pilots from ATL saying there might be flights to Ireland on the 737-700. They are typing all first officers in training right now and going to type all remaining FO's as they come in for training at some point in the future. They will be looking to have three pilots on these flights as well as down to South America according to what these guys were saying. Just curious if anybody else has heard any of the same rumours?

And how much of that loss was a goodwill write-down (paper loss)? Try $6.15 billion of it. The rest was due to high fuel costs and most airlines have the same issue.

Given that you spend so much time at your desk, perhaps you should crack open an Accounting 101 book while your at it...

In the words of Steve Martin....EXXXXCUUUUUSSSE ME. Sorry, congrats on your $275 million loss. I guess the world is your oyster. I don't see why you shouldn't expand. We all should be so lucky as to work at a company that post such wonderful quarterly results. Once again, you are the envy of the industry....if you industry is the business of having a bunch of self rightious a-holes who act like massive losses are no big deal.

I can't wait to see what you blame your second quarter losses on.

Ed also clarified questions about Wall Street support, our preparation for higher fuel prices, and a $6.1 billion goodwill balance reported in our quarterly results.
“This was pure book-keeping,” he said. “It has no effect on cash and is not a reflection on the company’s operational performance.” It was ‘fresh start’ accounting that included all of our assets and liabilities and their market value. “Given that our valuation of the company was approximately $10 billion, that led to a very large goodwill value. Since that time, oil prices have doubled, which has reduced our stock price and company valuation. Our investors understood this was purely accounting and in fact did not ask a single question on our earnings call Wednesday. Unfortunately, some of the press (and Tanker Clown who continuously has no clue and cant stand his miserable position in life) are not as educated and did not understand that it was purely a bookkeeping matter.”

This question is pure curiosity, but does anyone know what a goodwill write-down actually is or what it actually accomplishes? Is it just to help the merger? Does it screw any of the investors, partners, or vendors that do business with Delta?
