Comair Pilots to Vote on Pay Freeze Proposal

Comair reached a tentative letter of agreement with its Air Line Pilots Association unit on a proposal to freeze pay in exchange for as many a 35 growth aircraft, but management is still in negotiations with its flight attendants.



The two sides have been trying to reach a deal for about two weeks, and Comair President Fred Buttrell earlier this month challenged both the pilots and flight attendants to accept management’s proposal by the third week in February. An earlier proposal from management said Comair could get 35 additional planes if the unions reached an agreement. Comair’s ALPA Master Executive Council has endorsed the proposed letter of agreement, and the deal will now go out to the 1,900 pilots for a vote.



After the proposed letter of agreement’s final language is written, road shows and presentations will be scheduled for all pilots, Buttrell said in an internal memo to pilots. “Details of the proposal will be shared at that time,” he wrote. “It is important to emphasize that no changes to the current contract will occur without a pilot ratification vote.”

Comair currently flies 164 CRJs and has no deliveries scheduled this year. The airline remains in talks with the flight attendants, represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. “Time is of the essence,” a spokesperson said. So what are you saying? You're so embarrassed by your own contract that you want CMR to take this deal so the flack will deflect off you?

If it wasn't for all the sh!t contracts that have been signed in the last couple years, this proposal wouldn't have gotten this far.

If this passes don't blame the CMR pilots.. blame yourself.
 
Looks like we will be flying even more 170's when deal is voted down. I'm glad Comair didn't hire me, would have hated to have been stuck a five year FO.

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Mechanics for Comair have rejected the airline's proposed contract that would have given them 2 percent pay raises, their labor union announced Thursday.

Joseph Tiberi, spokesman for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, said he did not have the totals from voting over the past four days. The contract would have been retroactive to June 1, 2004.

The pay raise, however, would not have taken effect until June 1 of this year, and the contract would have allowed new wage negotiations starting June 1, 2006, Tiberi said.

Fred Buttrell, who took over Jan. 17 as Comair's president, had touted the contract proposal to help control labor costs in the competitive market among regional airlines. Buttrell is urging Comair's 6,000 employees to work together in seeking new business from major carriers that hire out supplemental flying to the regional airlines. Comair is a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines Inc.

The union's negotiating committee had recommended approval of the contract, Tiberi said. Union leaders will meet with the mechanics to ask why they turned down the deal, then will ask to meet with Comair representatives, he said.

"Although a different outcome would have been welcome, the company is ready to move forward with meaningful discussion with union representatives," Comair spokesman Nick Miller said of the union's vote.

The mechanics voted in Cincinnati, Akron/Canton, Dayton, Orlando, Fla., and Lexington, Ky. Hourly base wages for Comair mechanics currently range from $12.01 to $21.97.

Comair is based at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport. The airline carries about 30,000 passengers daily to 119 cities in the United States, mostly east of the Mississippi River, and Canada and the Bahamas.

Buttrell has said Comair must improve profits, operating reliability and customer service after a nationwide shutdown of its flights Christmas Day cost it and Delta $20 million.

Comair also has asked the unions for its pilots and flight attendants to accept pay freezes for the remainder of their current contracts, plus yearlong extensions, so the airline could buy up to 35 new jets to better compete with rivals. The pilots' union said it is working with Comair on a written pay-freeze proposal to present to its members, but the flight attendants' union said it needs more information before it can take a proposal to its members. Comair's plans included bringing more of its jet maintenance work in-house rather than hiring it out. Comair has said that would create additional jobs for as many as 100 mechanics and support staff at facilities in Akron-Canton, Greensboro, N.C., Lexington, Knoxville, Tenn., and Raleigh-Durham, N.C.
 
This will be interesting if they vote this down. The main deal these days with Regionals has been growth for pay cuts or pay freezes, and that started with the SkyWest pilots. CHQ may benefit if they vote NO.

CHQ WILL benefit if we vote NO. This is why you'll see all the spin put on this by the CHQ pilots.

Remember that when you read threads like this where PAY CUTS! are in big bold letters, yet the article does not use the phrase a single time. Its called "spin." They've grown off of Comair's strong union position for years and now their scared they won't be able to sneak in and snag even more growth. Of course they want us to vote NO. They have everything to gain from a NO vote.

The only thing to worry about anymore is your family. This industry is so cut throat now that it is pathetic. We all have taken it in the rear to survive. Vote for what is right in your heart. SkyWest management is burning their bridge and the unions aren't really protecting things for their members anymore. We are in a sad state in this industry but it will turn around I hope. There are alot of people who want to place blame but do what puts food on your table for you and your kids. If someone confronts you, stand on your own two feet. SkyWest has their own situation, Mesa had their own situation, and Comair now has a situation to deal with. I don't stand in your shoes, so you won't hear anything from me. Good luck to all!

No spin is necessary. For years you guys have been pounding your holier than thou chests about being the highest paid. The fact is you guys enjoy that so much, there is no way you would give that up. Funny thing is they weren't doing that when they signed the PFT loan application forms.

Regionals have thrived for years because of attrition and juniority factor. Now, that people are actually staying, Houston we have a problem.
