I wonder why?

That's because about 70% of us have sold out and are to embarassed to share!My airline included. Where else in the industry do people think they're better than the next guy because they make .75 cents more a hour. AD
 
what is the difference between the A-Plan and the B-Plan?

I know one is a lump-sum and the other is an anniuity, but which is which, and how is it actually computed?

A-Plan is usually a defined BENEFIT plan in which the plan pays a set benefit formula (eg 1.25% of Final Average Pay, 3 yr average, times years of service).

B-Plan is usually a defined CONTRIBUTION plan in which the plan states a set amount the participant will contribute during the year (eg 15% of pay with a company match of $1/$1 for first 3%)

A-plan is usually in annuity form, although some are going to lump sums. B-plan pays out the accumulated account balance, ie a lump sum. An A-plan lump sum is simply the actuarial equivalence of the monthly benefit (ie a conversion factor, based on mortality, age, sex, other factors) and as such is in theory equivalent to a monthly benefit (eg $100/mo for life @ age 65 is approx. $12,000 in lump sum value).
 
A buddy of mine at another regional is finally feeling the pain of excepting his contract now that the novelty of flying a shiny new jet has worn off and he is still living on his buddy's couch a year later..

As far as the retirement I will try to clarify it quoting our contract if anyone is interested.


"Effective January 1,2001, the company will match 50% of the pilots's contribution to his 401k account of up to 5% of his eligible earnings."

Right now we can contribute up to 15% of our earnings to this plan or a max of I believe 15,000 a year. Per HR, the 15% will increase later this year so more junior people will have a chance to achieve the cap. It basically 2.5% like posted.

The retirement plan is as follows
0-4 years 2% of eligible earnings
5-9 " 4% "" ""
10-14 " 6% "" ""
15-19 " 8% "" ""
20+ " 10% "" ""

It is my understanding that these are now company wide benefits.

Take a close look at the contract and you will see it is fair. NOthing more nothing less, I already think we practically fly the 70-seater for free. It is rediculous for somone to think their group cannot acheive this. This job is not worth doing for less than this. Next contract, looking for a 5.75hr foreward looking min day rig, to increase productivity. Mesaba got one, but I belive it is four hours. That and keep the yearly cost of living increases going, and there might not be much of a fight next time. Senior guys want retirement tweaked, so maybe some resistance there.

This contract should be the minimum anyone would accept.
