But ya have to run two flights on Rj's to one with the 9...apples oranges?

How about carbon dating those DC-9's?

Laugh all you want at the age of the DC-9. The aircraft is paid for and it's dispatch reliability is not as bad as you would think.

When a light goes off on your electric airplane, the show stops, when it goes off in a DC-9, you pull and reset and life is good for the most part.

Newer is not always better. In light of recent fuel prices the DC-9 is not a bad thing. What do you think the TOTAL costs is to run 2 50-seat RJs with lease payments from ATL-MSP instead of a single DC9?

And there is no lease payment on the DC9....final nail in the coffin for the RJ.

The key thing here is that you can't just park a plane if it is leased. But, you can if you own it. Parking a leased RJ still means lease payments. You can move out of a leased apartment too, but you still have to pay for it.

Completely agree with you.

I just hope that the combined management at the new Delta will find a way to renegotiate their agreements with regional partners. Fee for departure has drained both of our bank accounts for long enough. It has just taken time to come to fruition. The recent spike in the price of oil has only accentuated the inherent inefficiencies of a fee for departure program.

If management can find a reason to park them they will. Didn't DAL announce a few weeks back that they cancelled some flying by Mesa Airlines due to on-time performance issues? I see this and other reasons being used in the future to eliminate inefficient flying.

I agree. I hope we could figure out how to do that with other RJ operators, but some have some tight contracts. We all know that 50 seat RJs cannot make money for us with high oil. I think dumping 70 or so is a good start.

Isn't the Freedom deal going to dump 36? If so that's a good start. Can Delta find other ways to dump RJ's they don't lease or have in "tight contracts"?

But, but, what would happen to our precious, CEO bonus programs at the regionals? (sarcasm)

Sure you do......when it is cheaper to fly the DC9 than to park two RJs. Which is the whole point, it is cheaper and the reason the coffin is closing on the RJ.

Oh, by the way here is a quote from you earlier....

As far as the DC9s go, well, our future management keeps saying they will use some on current RJ routes. We can only hope that is true. Fingers crossed!

Read the above. I'll find more of your flip flop statements if you would like.

Thanks for editing your original post. Anyway, I think it would be great to use DC9s instead of RJs. I always have, since it would save mainline jobs. When someone on here said it would be easier to park RJs, I disagreed, since it might be harder to park something that has a LONG TERM lease. If you own a plane outright, you can park it and not have to pay lease payments. Get it? That is what I was saying, not that I would rather park DC9s. No, I would rather keep DC9s flying. It might be EASIER to park DC9s though, since they are owned and can sit in the desert without costing extra money. But again, I do NOT want that to happen.

And please, show me some more of my flip flop statements. I would love to refute them. Overall, I would like this merger to work, and not lose one mainline pilot. I would like the SLI to be fair, and I would like us to become a power house airline in the World. I also would like to win the lottery (hey, I was hired at Delta, right?!), and to own FI, so I could have my own category called "Ask the General." Fingers crossed!
