(We could debate exactly who qualifies for that label, but still . . .)

What will be the final analysis of ALPA's handling of the alter-ego airline problem?

Did what they should?
Didn't do enough?
Totally f*cked it up?
They don't really care 'cause they're pushing age 65?

Not to start another RJDC thread, but I'm trying to address the question of why the regionals have such anti-ALPA feelings right now which is running on another thread.

.....I'm trying to address the question of why the regionals have such anti-ALPA feelings right now.....

You wouldn't know that by most everyone on flightinfo ganging up on the Skywest pilots for rejecting ALPA. But maybe they do know that and they're just jealous that the Skywest pilots are smart.

We are responsible for this mess. We are ALPA's members. With rare exception, each airline's Master Executive Counsel has taken action independently of what would be good for our profession and ALPA national has done little to help guide, or lead, us towards unity.

ASA's recent TA serves as an example. The airline suffered the loss of at least 26 of its' highest paying jets and yet still, they failed to put scope as a high enough priority to address the threat from non union SkyWest.

The SkyWest pilots were not impressed enough to vote ALPA. However, had ALPA secured the return of ASA's assets, using scope to secure growth, the SkyWest pilots probably would have thought differently.

You say this is not supposed to be an RJDC thread, but who else has really done anything about the alter ego problem? At least national should be providing a forum for getting MECs together to strategize a little now.

It isn't enough, but in the absence of leadership, it is going to be up to us to fix this mess by holding our reps accountable and supporting them when they do the right thing.

Until we threaten the existance of ALPA, it will not change.... Only then will it act like a true union.....

ALPA has helped to create alter-ego carriers when it benefits the elephants....

ALPA cares about ALPA..... until you challenge it's existance, nothing will change....

I guess that it could be argued that we are an alter ego airline!

The mainline members seem to have bought into management's position that our lower cost operations are necessary to provide the mainline feed so that they can keep their higher paying jobs with better benefits. We are perceived as a necessary evil.

Absolutely we are an alter-ego carrier...... We ALL are at this point... Just some of pay union dues and some of don't.....

Your absolutely correct about the mainline pilots... they have taken bargaining credits for helping to keep regional costs lower..... We are fighting for a bigger piece of the pie.... even if it means taking some away from our "brothers"..... Does that sound like a "union"?

Alter-Ego?

We are sub-contractors...... That is the very definition of a regional airline-it is what we do......
ALPA can't and shouldn't change that.

When you build a house, do you call the plumbing guy an "alter-ego" for the general contractor? What about the electrician? Is that guy an "alter-ego" for the developer? What if they all happen to work for the same homebuilding corporation? Are they all "alter-egos" of one-another? Do they all get paid the same? Does the moulding guy get as fat a paycheck as the structural engineer-even though they may actually work for the same project? This very idea is absurd.

Face it, Joe-we fly different planes-we are sub-contractors for our airlines. ALPA cannot and will not repair or alter this situation. It is a falsehood to assume that we are all the same-if you were the same as a DAL pilot, guess what-your paycheck would say Delta on it.

You are employed by a sub-contractor-the RJDC can't fix that. If you are so unhappy with your lot in life, just get some desk job. Stop trying to destroy ALPA like a moron-ALPA's demise will not satisfy the deep pathological dis-satisfaction with life you seem to have.

Poor analogies. How about, when you build a house, and subcontract out the plumbing, is it fair for the plumbing company to employ one group to install the 3" pipes, but further subcontract out all the 2 1/2" pipes to another company whose employees get paid far less? It's all pipework!

I can't believe you have the arrogance to compare mainline pilots to structural engineers, and regional pilots to moulding guys. A transport jet is a transport jet. We all do the same thing. It's all pipework!

Only when everyone gets the idea that regional pilots do the same job as mainline pilots will we all have a chance at working through this mess together.
