OK, so I just got back from a trip and I'm a commuter and both legs to and from the crew was all female. I'm talking about both a mainline flight and an Express. Not that there's anything wrong with it, I was just kind of surprised! I thought the ratio of female pilots was pretty low but it seemes to be growing.
Here is a question though. With the economy getting back to normal and the majors possibly doing better and hiring in the next few years, do airlines (especially the majors) still preferentially hire women over men? Are there still quotas for them to fill? If so, I think we're in a hurt if there are more and more women flying and also they will be the first to get the jobs.
This is not meant to be inflamatory toward any women. I've flown with a few and they've all been great pilots. They seem to try harder than a lot of male pilots I've flown with.
But I'm just wondering about the future jobs out there.
Any insights?

Yes, the key word is TRY.

I don't think I could have said that any better.... It is still a "numbers game" and they are still going to always be in the minority in this industry.

Get over yourselves. If men flew better than women the airplane would be controlled by our genitalia.

What a stupid thread. Is the black pilot thread next, cuz that would be equally stupid.

Good thing they don't have to back it up...:)
Oh that was bad!
Honestly the best pilots I've flown with have been female captains. I can't believe some of the comments they still get from passengers right to their face or even under their breath.

of all the possible things that could threaten future jobs, you're worried about a woman taking your job?

on the small chance this isn't flamebait, why not wait till you get a rejection letter from a major that says "We're sorry, we've decided to hire a less-experienced woman instead of you."

then take the letter to a labor attorney and cash in! oh wait, you mean the airlines don't specifically tell us why we weren't hired? doesn't matter, sue anyway, you've already found your excuse...

The closest I've ever come to wanting to smack a px was when he started loudly speculating about our female capt (also a good friend of mine)...how he couldn't believe that a woman was flying, and that she didn't look a day over 15, leave alone old enough to fly. Some people are so freaking ignorant. Shame we hit that isloated patch of turbulence right by his seat, and I coudn't *quite* catch the Coke in time.....

Women are inferior to Men in regards to mastering their motor skills. Yes, there are exceptions to the norm like Patty Wagstaff, but overall, most women pilots aren't that great when it comes to flying. Same reason as pro women billiards players can't beat the men, they simply aren't as capable of matching mens motor skills. As far as decision making skills and planning and thinking ahead....well..... not much better there either. The sad thing is, most women pilots over compensate by having a chip on their shoulder and are over bearing.

I see you have met English.

The following may or may not be true, but I did hear it from someone in HQ that had no reason to make it up...

When I was flying the 1900, my then company received a letter of complaint from a passenger. They called the woman and asked her to elaborate on the complaint... And from the sound of her voice it appeared to be a "little ol' lady"...

Her complaint was that the Captain let the flight attendant ride in the cockpit, and worse, allowed her to FLY THE PLANE. To make it worse still, periodically the "flight attendant" would reach over and massage the Captain's knee.

Or, in other words to those in the know, the female First Officer was adjusting the pitch trim wheel by hand.

:D

This topic AGAIN? Sounds like there are some inferiority complexes around here. Although the story about the "flight attendant" flying the plane is funny. This thread is either flamebait or just plain stupid.

Inferior motor skills? That's the silliest thing I've heard so far! Let's come up with a reason why black pilots can't hack it like the white folk. Maybe jewish pilots are worse than christian pilots. Sheesh.

Who gives a sh1t about being politically correct. I've flown with a few dudes who could use some help with their technique, but rarely do they offer excuses or a "chip", unlike female pilots.
That's the difference...

I saw on the discovery channel that women are much better in communication, and in multitasking. They are worse in recognizing and dealing with tasks involving 3D motion (i.e. parking a car).

They’ve also mentioned that women can deal with emotions of others much better (hard to believe at times LOL). For example while a male is looking at a picture of someone's face, it takes a second or two for him to realize the emotional expression. However a female recognizes the expression almost instantly, actually even before she recognizes the face itself. Huh?

Thought it was interesting.

Don't blame us if you girls can't keep it wet. :D

I'm KIDDING!! This has to be one of the dumbest and more useless threads I think I've seen on these boards... but I had to give your sh*t back to you! ;)

Dude... it made me laugh, but PLEASE don't start a way to combine both of these threads!! :D

Seriously, what the h*ll does gender have to do with ability to fly? Technically, women have superior cognitive skills for most of our related job requirements, the motor skills only come into play in the last seconds of the emergency anyway, and if you're waiting until that second to "make-or-break" the scenario and decide if you live or die, you're too late anyway.

Otherwise, in daily ops, who the f*ck cares...

On a serious note, I had a Capt. say he preferrred not to fly with female F/Os.

When I asked him why, he said he preferred to be able to openly fart in the cockpit, and that he felt uncomfortable doing that with a woman next to him. :D
