If they placed a "cannot act as Pt 121 PIC" limitation upon this (as in would have to transition back to F/O from age 65-70), I would guess not many would stay. For many, I believe it's as much about ego as $$. They just can't picture themselves with 3 stripes slinging gear for "whippersnappers".

I would agree, especially what with some geezers now claiming that they are, in fact, NOT broke, but are just staying because they "want to". I bet they'll stop wanting to real fast, if it meant the right seat.

Just as you say most are definitely NOT broke. The problem is that back in the 80’s they thought they were going to retire uber rich and now they are only modestly rich. Plus with the fall of the stock markets they are still "losing money". The psychology of money loss is tremendous. Even though they could retire comfortably, they won’t because they are trying to recover money they will never get back. That's why they are so dangerous. It's a desperate act and they are willing to sellout anyone.
This is not just confined to the aviation career. It’s happening everywhere. My parents are the same and are not in aviation. The sad thing is that they have already had lucrative times and when it’s most important for investing in their 30’s and 40’s. With them stagnating and keeping so many out of work that needs to be investing in retirement, they are creating a future poor generation.

That's changing the subject.. but that's definitely not helping our situation. You might remember the baby boomers voted him in. Young people don't vote.
It's just another example of trying to get a quick fix to a large problem at the expense of future generations.

Plus you got all these old airline pilot types who got their kids in this profession. Typically, they encouraged this pyramid mess of higher end pay at the top and below poverty starting wages by getting their kids to take short cuts in the career, the ole go to the worst regional in the world and git yer time advice. Greed at the top while pissing on the bottom.

EU court rules against Lufthansa pilot retirement rules

The European Court of Justice has ruled that mandatory retirement of airline pilots at the age of 60, as practised by Lufthansa, constitutes age discrimination and that flight crew should be allowed to work, albeit with certain limitations, until the maximum legal age of 65.
Three former Lufthansa captains had previously complained before German courts that they had to retire at 60 and that their employment contracts should be extended until 65.
International regulations allow airline transport pilot license holders to work until 65. Between 60 and 65, however, they may only fly in a multi-crew environment with one pilot being younger than 60. They have to retire at 65 as the ATPL automatically expires and will not be extended.
However, Lufthansa has a collective agreement with its pilot union, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), which stipulates that flight crew must retire at 60.
The EU court has now ruled that "prohibiting airline pilots from working after the age of 60 constitutes discrimination on grounds of age". The judges argued that "while the right to act as a pilot may be limited from that age [60], total prohibition goes beyond that which is necessary to ensure air traffic safety".
While the court accepted that individual flight crew members might "no longer possess the physical capabilities to carry out their occupational activity", it was only in "very limited circumstances that such a difference in treatment may be justified".
Both Lufthansa and VC said that the mandatory retirement age of their agreement was never a point of disagreement between them. A spokesperson for the airline stated that the rule has been in place since 1956.
A VC spokesman said that the union was not content with the EU court ruling because there was sufficient medical evidence that human performance, such as sight, the ability to concentrate and co-ordination, diminishes with age and that airline pilots should stop flying at 60.
He questioned what medical expertise the court had used to arrive at its decision.
Lufthansa expects an impact by the ruling in the medium term and therefore wants to find a solution in discussions with VC soon.
There will be no immediate impact, as the EU decision will have to be transferred to Germany's Federal Labour Court to be turned into binding law.

Stealing ten years of seniority from junior pilots is an immoral windfall for the guys at the top. If they are proud of it, well they are no different than any other kind of person who steals. Go ahead and try to explain to some smirking punk who steals cars that he is immoral. He just won't get it.

Neither will these boomers who have so poorly planned for their future that they have to steal someone else's. Their entitlement mentality is too ingrained. After years of advancing on other pilots being forced to retire at 60, they conveniently change the rules for themselves. This is a sign of a person who has no personal sense of honor or accountability.

Old age sure can turn people into opportunistic, craven individuals. Which is why they will probably get age 70 passed - politicians are afraid of panicking old people.
