New airline pilots on the radio

Touche. I would say only a fool would enter the pattern at an uncontrolled field and be certain that everyone in the pattern had a radio and a transponder.

New airline pilots on the radio

I don't agree with you there. The AIM clearly says that phrase should not be used under any condition. The problem arises when you have 3 or 4 planes in the pattern and somebody new on the frequency says, "any traffic in the area please advise". Then you have people stepping all over each...

New airline pilots on the radio

I ask this question because I want to know how to configure. The 737 has flap speed restrictions and isn't as easy to bring down as other jets. If they want a short approach you are going to need the gear right now. Throw the gear early when final is stretching out to 20 miles and you are...

    Call for Release

As long as we are handing out reading assignments, read question 7 from this FAA Q and A on the climb via clearance. http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/offices/afs/afs400/afs470/pbn/media/RNAV1_RNP1_RNAV2/Climb_Descend_Via_FAQ.pdf Top altitudes are published on the...

    Call for Release

Incorrect. There is no top altitude on the Pomona 7 and many other departures, but there is a hold down. In this case you would comply with the 7000 restriction and then climb and maintain 14000.

What kind of flashlight would you recommend for preflights?

I got one of these for $6 from amazon. Very bright with a single AA size 14500 battery, or you can use a AA and it isn't quite as bright. Will light up the tail and it is very light. After losing a $50 flashlight and a $40 one, these are the way to go...

How is FAR 117 transition going

Both crewmembers have to send a special acars which acts as a digital signature certifying fit for duty, release acceptance, and fdp extensions.

How is FAR 117 transition going

Also, the second you click yes is when the door will burst open and you will be tested for alcohol if someone smelled you at security. Prior to that, you could say you were going to call in sick.

    High cholestorol, hdl, and triglycerides

But wouldn't it be worth it to try to fix the problem with diet before going the drug route? How do you know if your problem is hereditary or diet based unless you try a different diet for 3 weeks and see if your markers improve or not...

Delta mainline back to Juneau? Looks like it in late May...

    Alaska Announces SLC-LAX,SJC,PDX,SEA,SAN

Does anyone else think the timing of all this going on with Delta and our Chairman of the Board "retiring" simultaneously is a little interesting? Did Delta make an offer for Alaska that was rebuffed and now they are trying to drive the price of Alaska stock down and revisit the offer in a...

Mindset of the typical US Airways east pilot?

So did anyone else notice that this guy's mailing address goes to a boat in a marina in Seattle? Washington is a state with no income tax. I would bet a large sum that he lists this boat as his primary residence. Does he own a house in another state? I'll be the thinks only the overweight...

    1st class med not req'd for FO's

Faa published their final rule today. ATP required for FO's but you only need a second class medical unless you are flying supplemental or flag with multiple crews. Page 9-10 here: http://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/rulemaking/recently_published/media/2120-AJ67.pdf

What is the Process to Jumpseat on Hawaiian?

I jumped on Hawaiian once years ago and I made the mistake of reading the jumpseat pass that I had signed. I knew all airlines had different policies so I took the time to read the pass. It may have been on the back but it said to present your pass to the lead flight attendant and he/she will...

Alaska TA: what's in it for me?

If this passes, I'm thinking seriously about not paying any more dues. I know I would have to cancel my ALPA life and loss of medical insurance, but I could get that elsewhere. I would then set up a bank account and have the amount I used to pay in dues automatically wired to that account...

    Alaska contract

I guess I'm too dumb to figure out how to vote. I can't find the voting section anywhere on the alpa site. edit: found it, big green "ballot open" button on the right side of the home page.

My point is that they always ask that question in the poll. They shouldn't even ask that question. When it is time, have a strike vote. Then you will know. Doing so too early biases out negotiators.
