I believe it has to do with the lease agreement that FedEx has with the Feeder operators. FedEx owns most of the planes the feeders operate. I'm not exactly sure the reasoning, but that's the way its always been!
I was operating the next plane to land after our MD-10 landed in Memphis and had the left main collapse a couple months ago. I had a UPS jumpseater in back and called him up during the taxi in to our ramp so that he could grab my camera and we could get some pictures! ;)
