US Air firing pilot who's gun discharged

Had this happened postflight, it would have been handled differently. Accidents that occur while adhering to SOP's are accidents. Mishaps that occur while violating SOP's are "a little tougher" to defend.

ALPA votes 18 to 1 to throw out AAA/AWA award!

It is very disappointing that the east is behaving in such a manner. Shouldn't surprise me. The east will destroy US Airways because they weren't granted the windfall they expected from their previously-experienced arbitrator - they will not be able to carpetbag out west and take all the...

    Age 60 Battle vs ALPA

If it were only about safety, there are many 50-year olds running around that make a good case for lowering the age! But, let's call a duck a duck; it really seems to be about career expectations. Raising the age only benefits captains and gets the F/O nothing but a longer wait to upgrade...

    AWA hiring/poolies

I just hope they join our little dysfunctional family with the same great attitude and enthusiasm our recent street hires (the kind of fine folks who wanted to work for Cactus, filled out apps, secured "golden referrals", waited the good wait for interviews, etc.) have brought. Cheers!

    Awa Merger

I couldn't agree more with the fence idea. I, personally, would like to see a good old fashioned block wall that extends at least 25 years (with a provision to extend it further after age-60 goes bye-bye). [Thought ya'all could use a little levity . . .] Cheers!

    Airways/Cactus Hnl,ogg,koa service

Back during this well-known debacle, Phoenix was just a sleepy little ville that couldn't support anything west of LAX. (Phoenix didn't even have a freeway system back then!) Things have changed a little over the last 15 years. Hawaiian is filling seats almost everyday (and I'm not talking...

AWA/U Seniority Food Fight - The First Salvo

By the rough numbers I've seen, there are about 5000 pilots combined. The plan calls for 371 aircraft. Assuming a 5:1 crew ratio, we are currently about 1300 pilots in excess. Of course, there are several years to retire/attrit 1300 pilots, but can or will it be done by "integration date"...

New company name for USAirways and America West merger

Bad Idea #2263 (or is that the new callsign?)

    SWA GS Prep

Worried? Either you know your stuff (you deserve the job for maintaining preparedness) or you don't (a stressed-out basket case who might/might not deserve working for the best carrier in the industry). How did you show up when you got your type? Obviously you knew enough to pass the...

    Does size matter?

I agree with pilotyip -- except I'd bump that number up to 2000. I heard a SW regional chief say that the unofficial "floor" is 1800 T-PIC. Of course, if you're "special" I'm sure there's a little flexibility. But if you're not drinking buddies with "the man", don't count on 1000 being...

    No Sim for the interview?

The FAA doesn't care if we keep it or not -- as long as it isn't used for official training. AWA doesn't own it (can't remember who does -- PanAm, maybe?). The bean counters will not pay for it if it can't be used to check boxes. Cheers!

    Aloha files Chapter 11

I heard our inflight shutdown rate pretty much guarantees we won't see ETOPS with our own equipment before '06. Thus, to meet management's goal of doing Hawaii in '05, we'd have to buy somebody else's ETOPS equipment. Since we aborted the ATA bid, we need to buy somewhere else. Would $35 get...

America West 01/04/05 Class Official Notification?

You do know we have a 2-hour callout, right? After I got the job, I received a letter telling me which I class I was in and that I was to call and tell them that I would be there (RSVP). This was many years ago, so things may have changed. Cheers, and welcome to the Cactus Plant!

    "The New ATA"

My apologies . . . I heard there were captains at ATA with a hire date of 2000 -- should've checked the accuracy of that. I'll just stick my head back in the puddle now. Ya'all take care now, God bless, peace be with you. Ranter out.

    "The New ATA"

Dude, I agree with you in that it is premature to debate specifics. What I think is fair is different than what an ATA person would think is fair, which may very well be different than what you consider fair. I guess my real tune depends on whether this turns out to be a merger or an...

    "The New ATA"

Dude, if showing respect consists of a warm welcome, professional and courteous behavior, and kindness of spirit (don't forget to throw in a healthy dash of "gentlemanliness" for good measure), then I know of no AWA pilot who wouldn't accord the ATA crews their deserved respect. If your...

I thought AWA was doing good!!!

Haven't fallen off the planet completely, only partially! Actually, just been hibernating/lurking. I've never been one to wave pompoms and whatnot, but reading your less-than-thoroughly-pessimistic posts on the great Cactus in the desert, you're great for my morale! Since you're on the dark...

    True enough! Simply amazing . . .

I thought AWA was doing good!!!

Except for the actual hotel room rate, it costs the company $2/hr./pilot to "utilize" them this way. Every 24+ hour layover I've had since Contract '04 went into effect has the "working" days blocked high enough to negate any and all trip rigs, resulting in my "earning" my $2/hr. to sit in a...

    SECURITY ALERT: Flight Crews

Not long after 9/11, a fed wanted to ride one of our company jumpseats. The captain, exercising all due vigilance, requested additional verification that the guy was legit. The inspector took great umbrage to the captain exercising his responsibilities and tried violating the captain for...
