More Mexican flags than American flags today?

What's really comical here is how many "intelligent" pilots here start complaining about illegal immigrants, but then end up complaining about what the boyz over in the bario are playing on their car radios. Los hombres are likely 3rd generation American dude. Look, I'd wager that 4/5ths of...

    Landing clearance???

If I don't remember somebody checking in on final, I'll generally just broadcast "XXX123, cleared to land Rwy17" or similar. Sometimes they answer, sometimes they don't, no biggie. If I needed somebody to go around, I'd be in the final controller's ear, or on guard freq. or something. 99% of...

    Step Up for Aviation Labor

How about making the idiots in Management who squandered One and a Half Billion Dollars on the Advanced Automation System, with absolutely NOTHING to show for it, pay it all back? That's right folks, according to the GAO, the FAA spent $2.5 BILLION dollars back in the 1990s on the AAS, and only...

    Toughest US Approach?

Juneau is definately interesting, but so is descending 7000' in about eight miles at 320 kts while intercepting a DME arc on a checkride...

    Toughest US Approach?

You mean this one? ;) http://www.myairplane.com/databases/approach/pdfs/00354HI21.PDF IAF is JENOM now, used to be ABUCK iirc. Was often on the checkride for the REE pilots.

Ramped by 2 airport cops and 2 sheriffs. . .Accused me of a Felony!!!! No Kidding

Back to the original post; I'm wondering if there's a bit more to the story about a "non-pilot" owning this aircraft, and if that's why you got hassled to begin with. Is there someone at this airport unhappy that your friend owns the Grumman? Perhaps they tried to purchase it? That would...

F-16's dispatched to possibly shoot down airliner if it got "untoward".

That reminds me, time for my colonoscopy in around six months....

    Stupid C-172 Light Dimmer Rheostat.

The one site I looked at had Ohmite rheostats going for around $24-$50 apiece. Don't know if that site was the cheapest though. Still that's not a lot less than your $80 Cessna part. Might be more since the rheostat on my 172 controls two separate circuits. Sorry, can't help more.

    Stupid C-172 Light Dimmer Rheostat.

It's not quite that simple. Ohmite makes a hundred different, but similar rheostats. Do you know the exact model number and rated load? Do you know the A&P is going to sign this off for you? Another option is a solid state STC'd replacement from Tanis for (gasp) $375, but it's highly...

    Piper Comanche - Good Buy?

Simply updating the radios is relatively simple for a good shop, depends on what you're wanting and willing to spend. A new 430 and a couple other new radios will cost around $20k installed. We paid around $7000 for a used KY97 and KNS80 plus new CDI plus used KR86 and plus dual avionics...

Pet peeves from the ATC folks

Bullshat. The *average* controller doesn't make that unless he worked at a major hub every weekend, Holidays, lots of nights, and did a fair amount of overtime to boot. I've got 26 years and made about $60,000 less than that in pay. Now, they want to add on the claimed value of bennies like...

    Training your kid to fly..

Albie, just my experiences; I was an airplane nut from age 8, but my Dad had me take lessons with other folks in a J-3 and C-150 when I turned 16. (He was a DC-8/L1011 Capt) I think he felt it kept personalities out of the picture. He did work with me after I got the Private, but he was a...

T38 Student doesnt turn heat off vid

Huggy, what base is that? I haven't heard of an FAA controller getting a fun military ride for a decade or so. I think it's a great experience.

T38 Student doesnt turn heat off vid

Hey Gorilla, Thanks again to you HMN guys for giving controllers T-38 rides too. :D I still have photos, didn't :puke: once. (Had the O2 and AC going pretty good though) Too bad they won't let the new generation of controllers do that.:(

Your most boneheaded mistake as a CFI

Yeah, that was one of the "tricks" of the Arrow. Got briefed on it during my checkout. Happened to lots of pilots. Turning on the nav lights dimmed the gear lights. I think the Lance was the same. Don't recall the older pipers having that feature though.

    Piper Comanche - Good Buy?

I did my Comm/Inst ride in a 180 hp Commanche. From what I recall, some of the airframe parts can be difficult to get. One of the renters dropped the 180 in from about 20' and cracked a main gear casting. Those were tough to find even in 1975. But it was a sweet airplane anyway. If you're...

Pet peeves from the ATC folks

OK, one more; Look, you're motoring down final in your C172 at 100 kts at the "big" airport, trying to mesh with the other traffic. There's a couple folks waiting at the hold short line, and another two or so on final behind ya. The first turnoff is about 2200' down, the second is 3400' from...

Pet peeves from the ATC folks

I understand all of the above, and you have a point. It's the really egregious examples that get me. The guys who come sailing onto a midfield downwind at 10,000' and 300 kts gs, (when they were assigned 3000' 20 miles back), at a measely 1500 fpm descent, and then start chippin for the visual...

    250 below 10000

Generally speaking, I assume the pilot in the left seat of a civilian aircraft capable of exceeding 250 kts knows the FARs. :D
