Have any of your companies recently (or in the past) come down with specific prohibitions of active noise reduction (ANR) headsets?

Have any of your companies mandated use of TSO'd headsets only?

We've got a little sh*tstorm brewing at SWA and I'm trying to nail down the source. Thanks in advance for your helpful replies.

Alaska Airlines is about to also. I believe the company is in the process of changing the FOM with a list of TSO approved headsets. Bose/Uflymike set is such an awesome setup, I really hate to give it up. Isn't it true that only mike portion of the head set needs to be TSO'd? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. In any case, somebody/some corporation is jealous.

Anyone using the Bose QC2 - UFlyMike combo headset getting denied that privilege anywhere except SWA?

Thanks for responding by post or PM.

I would start by looking at Bose....I can't even imagine how much $$ Uflymike has taken out of the pockets of Bose.

Please focus all of your energy in TSO'ing the Uflymike set up. Let's make this combo legal ASAP!!

Baja.

It will never be TSO'd because when the batteries die, you can't hear the radio. When they die on an aviation headset, only the active noise reduction dies.

That's my point Pipe....change the setup so it will work when the batt's die. New model.....whatevevr. Just make it work!

I've lost count of the number of times guys I've flown with go off-com unintentionally with the QC2 and UFM combo. Dead batteries are the main culprit, but I've seen several guys have the mic be partially pulled from the headset socket as they move around a bit.

There's no doubt about the versatility of the UFM setup, though. Being able to use them in the cabin on deadheads is nice.

it does but itiwill cost you 1,000.00.

Yep. TSO = 500% markup - with most of that going for insurance. Your product now shares liability for a commercial airliner, everyone in it, and anything it could hit or fall on.

Seems here at UPS there is concern that you will not be able to hear the EICAS Caution (767,757) beeps when wearing ANR headsets. I have never used one, so I don't know if it's true or a valid concern or not.

What wrong with the Telex 850? ANR, NO batteries, priced right,TSO'd and works great.

Easy choice in my opinion.

We changed to a bigger o-ring to solve the unplugging problem in late 2005. If you run into another pilot having trouble with his adapter unplugging, tell him to give us a call for the free retrofit?

We use Telex 850s on the USAF 737-BBJs. Noise reduction is so good that you have to leave the earpiece off your ear a bit to hear the other pilot talking in the cockpit. No problems hearing any airplane bells, whistles or callouts though.

I think you have much bigger problems than the size of your O-ring. The government will stretch it for you very shortly.

FEDEX requires TSO

Just dusted off the FEDEX Flight OPS Manual....it says any personal headset must be TSO'd. Althought I will say I have seen people wearing the UflyMike headsets (myself included). Guess I will have to go reprimand myself.

Somehow I suspect that the X and QC2 attenuate the same frequency range...which would make them the same as far as this memo is concerned.

Mike, you know for sure?

We don't know. Nobody knows because Bose won't publish their numbers. Does anyone else find that curious? Friend of mine at SWA has a good friend who was on engineering team at Bose for QC2. His friend says the circuitry in the Bose X and QC2 are identical.

500.00 for the gerryrig or a 1000.00 for the real thing, with the risk of having to buy the real thing eventually? What's the dilema?

Easy decision for me...

For less than $500 you can get a Telex ANR Airman 850 with case, never needs batteries and it is TSO'd.

Except the 850's arent as good. (I use them for the lack of a battery) but the bose are better technology.....a quieter airplane is the only real answer.

Sennheiser

Any thoughts on Sennheiser ANR headsets?

Customers that have come to us rate them inferior to the UFlyMike but better than the Telex. We did a customer survey, and here's the rank order and score, based on quality, comfort and noise reduction:

Bose X "10"
UFlyMike/QC2 "8"
Sennheiser 25/45 "6"
Telex 850 "4"
Plantronics MS50 (earspike) "1"

There's a lot of difference between the "open" earpiece and "closed" earpiece model Sennheisers. The closed have much better noise cancelling, probably attributed mostly to passive protection. The biggest complaint with the Sennheiser is discomfort for extended wear and the cumbersome cordset/battery box setup; The Sennheisers sit ON the ear, so they hurt the cartilage after awhile. We've also heard that the Sennheiser changes the noise but doesn't cut it. The Telex just doesn't provide ANR equivalent to the others and sit on the ear, so they don't compete well with the others.

That's our experience, having tried a lot of headsets and had a lot of customers purchase our product over the others.

Does Bose really think this will net them any more money.? Look how quickly folks are interested in cheaper alternatives to the UFM. They're not going to buy the X. This will probably cost Bose money because people won't be buying QC2s to add the mike, in fact there may be many on e-bay if this doesn't get resolved.

My thoughts exactly! UFM is the only reason I bought a QC2 in the first place. Bose should be thanking them!

All I can say is that I ain't forkin' out $1K to buy the Bose X; good headset, but not worth the money. Reminds me too much of the big bulky DC's I used to wear on the FRED. I'm really hoping something good will result with the QC2/Uflymike very soon, like by next month.

For what it's worth, Mike, you really have put together an awesome headset. When something works really well, the "others" get jealous.

We've been overwhelmed by the response to our product. I didn't come up with the idea to make money. I made myself a headset because I wasn't satisfied with the performance and comfort of any others. I was really pleased with the comfort, size, clarity, ANR, and versatility. The stereo jack has proven to be a popular feature, also. It was clear from the start that we had stumbled on a better headset. Even the Bose X takes second place in size, comfort and versatility.
