CHECKLISTS:
Hint #1
Do you find that it is hard for your students to follow checklists?
How about a head buried in the cockpit reading a checklist during shutdown on the busy ramp?
Try this for a solution make up or cue words that include checklist items.

EXAMPLE:
G.U.M.P. Check (gas, undercarriage, mixture and prop)
SLOWDOWN PROCEDURE: Carb heat in, mixture rich, fuel on both

Hint #2
Climbing and Descending Checklist

SEVEN UP AND SEVEN DOWN:
(climb 7 up)Cowl flaps open, mixture rich, prop full, throttle full.
(descent 7 down) throttle reduce, prop adjust, mixture richen and cowl flaps closed.

This check is in the form of a seven and works for many types of aircraft.

Hint #3
Shutdown Checklist

BACKWARDS "L": Start from the top and shut down.Radios off, transponder off, flaps up, mixture lean, switches off, mags off (when engine quits), master off.
This one has been very successful with examiners because it never misses an item, keeps the student's eyes outside, and works on every airplane.

Hint #4
When teaching radio calls teach the five "W's". (works with both controlled and uncontrolled airports)
1. W ho they are calling.. ex.crestview unicom..
2. W ho they are.. cessna 23456
3. W here they are.. 10 miles to the north at 3500
4. W hat they want.. request airport advisory
5. W ho they are calling.. crestview unicom. It is good pratice to repeat the airport name as the last transmission. That way if it is missed at the beginning, it can be heard at the end.
